Adventist Community Services coordinates services provided by local churches for those in need of assistance.

Community Services provides an opportunity to reach out to the world as ambassadors for Christ and meet physical, mental and emotional needs. We are told that “many have no faith in God and have lost confidence in man. But they appreciate acts of sympathy and helpfulness. As they see one with no inducement of earthly praise or compensation coming to their homes, ministering to the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, comforting the sad, and tenderly pointing all to Him . . . their hearts are touched. . . . They see that God cares for them, and as His Word is opened they are prepared to listen.”—Medical Ministry, p. 247.

Steve Turner Williams Scholarship

What is the Steve Turner Williams Scholarship?

The Southwest Region Conference Adventist Community Services (SWRGC ACS) Department seeks to engage young adults in compassionate service to their communities. We are recognizing college students who demonstrate exemplary commitment to community services by awarding scholarships. Our scholarships honor the legacy of Steve Turner Williams who was an extraordinary educator, compassionate mentor of youth, life-long community services volunteer, faithful member of the Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and son of Irene Williams, former South Louisiana Community Services Federation Area Coordinator.

We are pleased to award a minimum of ten (10) scholarships in the amount of $500 each to college sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The scholarship awards committee may increase the dollar amount of the scholarships based on the availability of funds. Scholarships may be used for tuition, school fees, books, meals, or personal items.

Students do not need to attend a Seventh-day Adventist college or university to apply. Seven (7) scholarships will be awarded to students who are active members in good and regular standing at a Southwest Region Conference church congregation. If Southwest Region Conference students are attending colleges or universities outside of the Southwest Region Conference territory, then they must attend and serve a Seventh-day Adventist congregation near their college or university. Because we value and affirm our community partnerships, three (3) scholarships will be awarded to students who are not members of a Seventh-day Adventist congregation. The scholarship award will be based on a minimum of 30 documented hours of community service; 3 letters of recommendation from non-family references, one of which must be your church pastor or community services leader; a scholarship essay; a minimum GPA of 2.5; enrollment at a college or university; and US citizenship. Scholarships will be granted as follows:

  • one (1) student from the Ark-La-Tex Federation
  • one (1) student from the Capital Cities Federation
  • one (1) student from the Mountain States Federation
  • one (1) student from the North Central Texas FederationEach SWRGC pastor is invited to contribute $25.00 or more annually to the Steve
  • one (1) student from the Oklahoma Federation
  • one (1) student from the South Louisiana Federation
