There was no missing the excitement at Martin Luther King’s Christian Academy’s annual Black History celebration. From the red-carpet entrance to the afro-centric décor and themed refreshments, this year’s event stood out. Designed by teacher Lisa Hansom and Principal Deloris Newman, the program transformed the school into a live wax museum, featuring Pre-K through 8th grade students as historical figures.
Guests were welcomed by a video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech before entering the exhibit. Students, dressed as notable Black leaders and innovators, remained still until activated by visitors, then delivered engaging presentations about their figures.
Younger students portrayed icons such as Rosa Parks, Tiger Woods, and Garrett Morgan, while older students represented trailblazers including Anna Knight, Thurgood Marshall, Ida B. Wells, Matthew Henson, Zora Neale Hurston, Colin Kaepernick, Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson, and Dr. E.E. Cleveland.
The event even drew local media attention, with one reporter noting it as a fun, interactive way for students to learn their history. Hansom emphasized that the experience inspires students to see themselves in these achievements.
With overwhelming success, the school plans to expand the program next year, celebrating both education and cultural pride.
